Summer 1984
Valentine's Day 2008

Last Page :: Dexter Avenue North runs between Denny Way and the Ship Canal in Seattle, Washington. My walk was a mile right out of the middle, taking me from my Queen Anne apartment to the South Lake Union studio I had the pleasure of using for 23 years. The studio was demolished in early 2008 to make way for the new headquarters of a Seattle-based, e-commerce giant. 1600 square feet. 13 foot ceilings. Windows, 82 inches high, running the length of the 40 foot north and east walls. I enjoyed every countless hour I spent there, some of them even productive. Though it survived two earthquakes with me in it watching the huge ceiling beams shake, an amazon finally ate my studio.

DEXTER ICONS :: The accompanying images became familiar sights along my walk. Hieroglyphic messages from one city engineer to another; a pedestrian warning as graceful as Fred Astaire; the perfectly formed monogram offering from a single gull; blue and orange ice cream cones spilled on the sidewalk. For me they are iconic memories, links to that wonderful space.

The photos were made with a Samsung L74 Wide; some were cropped, all were sharpened.
